Save the date cards are a relatively new addition to the wedding stationery set. They can be a great idea for lots of reasons, and are usually sent out around six to eight months before the wedding day.

You have set your wedding day and have set about on the HUGE list of things that need to be organised for a wedding. Take the pressure off  yourself and send out save the date cards, so that your guests know the date and can organise accordingly. That way you have given yourself a bit of breathing space, and more time to send out your formal wedding invitations.

You are having a destination wedding, or inviting guests from afar.

If you are planning a wedding somewhere special that many of your guests will have to travel to, then a save the date card can be a great idea. Let your guests know when and where in advance so that they can begin to plan travel arrangements and accommodation, and also book time off work if needed. Your wedding guests will be grateful of the heads-up. Your invitations can then give all of the specific details.

Your wedding day falls on or around a popular holiday, or is being held at a popular destination spot.

If this is the case then you may need to give your guests as much time as possible to book accommodation and also time off work before other colleagues. In these circumstances it would be fine to send out save the date cards up to 12 months in advance.
